Migration and Natural History Information by species

Red-shouldered Hawk
Buteo lineatus

Of the several races that occur, lineatus of the east is the most migratory. It is a fairly common sight around the southern Great Lakes and from southern New England through the Appalachians and to the mid-Atlantic coast. Fewer migrants are noted southward; the Florida race is sedentary. The California race elegans appears regularly at Marin Headlands. Otherwise, rare in the west and uncommon around the northern Great Lakes. An early spring migrant, starting up in February and continuing into early April along the east coast and for a couple of weeks longer around the Great Lakes. Fall migration mostly from mid October through mid November, although some birds appear to resume southward movement with the onset of wintry weather.
