GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Category 1 Data: Data from hawk watches that have delegated responsibility for data release to HMANA consistent with the HMANA mission and Data Use Policy. See Data Submission Policy.

Category 2 Data: Data from hawk watches that have requested the offer of co-authorship if 20% or more of data used by the requestor, as measured in count days, is derived from that hawk watch. See Data Submission Policy.

Category 3 Data: Data from hawk watches that must be contacted directly for data release if any data from that hawk watch is requested. See Data Submission Policy.

Data: Raptor migration count information accumulated at a hawk watch, both for the current ongoing season, either spring or fall, and the historical information accumulated at the hawk watch over a series of seasons.

Data Entry Guidelines: Set of processes that define the mechanisms for Data Submission.

Data Release: The process of receiving permission to analyze, disseminate, or otherwise reproduce any of the data maintained by HMANA. Required for any dissemination of data beyond personal consumption. The term dissemination should be widely interpreted as thesis, in-house publication, web sites, presentations, slide shows, magazines, newspapers, etc., as well as formal scientific publications.

Data Release Policy: Set of rules and processes for data release, i.e. obtaining permission to use raptor migration data maintained by HMANA.

Data Release Request Form: Web based form for requesting permission to use raptor migration data sets maintained by HMANA.

Data Submission Policy: Set of rules and processes for submitting data to HawkCount.

Hawk Watch(es): A location where a regular count of raptor migration is undertaken at a site, generally on a long-term basis, by an individual or an organized group of hawk counters.

Metadata: Explanatory information about a data set. Typically includes (1) identification and basic information for the data set; (2) data quality (completeness of data set, consistence, sources of information, methods used to produce data); (3) spatial reference (coordinates, elevation); (4) currency and units employed in fields of the data set (strongly support only metric system); and (5) data ownership and contact information.

Raptor Migration Data Overview: Introductory policy document that defines general conditions and for data use and provisions for submission and release of data collected in Hawk Watches and maintained by HMANA in Hawk Count or in other data archives.

Questions regarding the data or this Data Release Policy may be submitted to the HMANA Data Curator via email to data@hmana.org.
